Livermore Valley Opera -
A Masked Ball. Un Ballo in Maschera, by Giuseppie Verdi

The words alone create notions of mystery, intrigue and romance. King Gustav III of Sweden loves the wife of his best friend, unaware that she returns his love. Her husband discovers their love. To get revenge, he joins conspirators who also want to kill the King. He kills the King at a masked ball, never realizing until too late that they are innocent of any wrongdoing. Musical highlights reflect the themes of betrayal, guilt and revenge. The lesson learned: things are not always what they seem. Sung in Italian with English supertitles

The Music Man Jr.
Master showman Harold Hill is in town and he’s got “seventy-six trombones” in tow. Can upright, uptight Marian, the town librarian, resist his powerful allure? The story follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize. The catch? He doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef.

Sense and Sensibility - Aquila Theatre
One of the most popular and beloved authors of all time, Jane Austen wrote with insight and wit about her own 18th century English upper middle class. “Sense and Sensibility” poignantly and cleverly illustrates the economic uncertainty created by the rigid rules of male inheritance and the limited choices for women of that era. After the untimely and unexpected death of their father, two sisters, the level-headed sensible Elinor and the hopelessly romantic Marianne, along with their mother, are forced to leave their comfortable way of life. With their only hope a profitable marriage, this classic romantic comedy is filled with love, heartbreak and unexpected twists as the sisters forge a new future for themselves. Aquila Theatre adapts Austen’s work in a bold and exciting new production which incorporates artistic director Desiree Sanchez’ innovative use of space, movement, design, and sound.

Catapult
Catapult uses a fascinating combination of shadow dance, story-telling and sculpture to engage the eye and spark the imagination. Finalists on the eighth season of “America’s Got Talent,” Catapult is all about the human body and its ability to transform. The talented dancers work behind a screen, moving together and separately to create seemingly impossible shadow silhouettes of the world around us – from an enormous mountain to a moving helicopter, from a live elephant to people talking inside a windowed house, and everything in between. It is impossible to imagine what will be shaped next or how it will be done, the transformations emerge to the delight of audiences as the unbelievable becomes believable before their very eyes.

Developed by founder and artistic director Adam Battlestein, Catapult’s “Magic Shadows” is packed with hundreds of shape transformations. There are eight stories told through music and shadows, as well as six shorter videos and brief moments of poetry and humor. “Magic Shadows” is a mesmerizing afternoon of entertainment that guarantees audiences will never look at their own shadow in quite the same way again.

Dr. Ben Santer Fingerprinting the Climate System - Rae Dorough Speaker Series
How and why did the scientific community identify a human-caused warming signal and why do scientists believe that human-caused fingerprints are ubiquitous in the climate system? How do rainfall, water vapor, river runoff, snowpack depth, atmospheric circulation, salinity and other climate variables factor into the climate change conclusions by scientists? Dr. Ben Santer holds a Ph.D. in climatology and is a recipient of numerous national and international awards related to biological and environmental research. He will discuss the identification of a number of different climate variables that lead to the conclusion that climate change is related to human influence.
