Livermore-Amador Symphony Concert - Winter Dreams

Sat
Livermore-Amador Symphony  - Winter Dreams
Suppé: Overture to The Beautiful Galatea
Raff: “Walpurgisnacht” from Symphony No. 8
Franck: Le Chasseur maudit
plus solos by winners of the 2019–2020 Competition for Young Musicians
Jason Klein, guest conductor

The charming dance music of Mozart, with the jingle of sleigh bells, sets a delightful scene to open our 57th season. Next, we turn to Saint-Saëns’ wintery image by composita through Pixabaybeloved Carnival of the Animals. Rich with lyricism and invention, this “Grand Zoological Fantasy” is much more than animal imitation. Its humor is surprisingly human, particularly when paired with the famously clever wit of poet Ogden Nash. Finally, we dive into Tchaikovsky’s groundbreaking first symphony, full of endless melodic inspiration; it evokes the beauty and isolation of a wintry landscape.

Note that the evening concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. (15 minutes later than usual, and no Prelude talk this time; doors open at 8 p.m.).

Dnau: an Emerald Isle Christmas
Hailing from historic County Waterford, Danú is one of the leading traditional Irish ensembles of today. Their standing room only concerts throughout Ireland are true events, featuring high-energy performances and a glorious mix of ancient Irish music and new repertoire. Celebrate Christmas and the New Year with some of the music, song, and dance that have been an integral part of joyous community traditions in the Emerald Isle for centuries.

Now celebrating their 25th anniversary, Danú’s exceptional players on flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion, bouzouki, and vocals (Irish and English), have performed around the globe and released seven critically-acclaimed albums. Winners of numerous awards from the BBC and Irish Music magazine, Danú has filled concert venues throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North America with stops at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and Symphony Space in New York City. Their live performances have been broadcast on NPR, the CBC, and the BBC. Danú takes its audiences on a musical journey to their native Ireland, offering a moving and memorable concert experience.

Mostly Kosher
A Gypsy-Rock Chanukah Celebration

Acclaimed klezmer gypsy-rock band, Mostly Kosher can be described as a musical feast that explodes into a global food-fight of jazz, Latin, rock, and folk. Join them for the beginning of Chanukah as they radically reconstruct Judaic and American cultural music with ravishing klezmer beats and arresting Yiddish refrains.

Led by frontman Leeav Sofer, one of Jewish Journal’s “30 under 30” most accomplished professionals in the Los Angeles Jewish diaspora, Mostly Kosher includes the talented violinist Janice Mautner Markham, drummer Eric Hagstrom, bassist Adam Levy, trombonist Mike King, and Will Brahm on guitar, with guest artists Aníbal Seminario and Anderson Quintero.

The band has appeared extensively on Southern California stages including a television appearance at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. They recently became the first Jewish music ensemble to perform during holiday celebrations at Disney Parks in both California and Florida. The first track off their acclaimed self-titled debut album, Ikh Hob Dikh Tsufil Lib (I Love You Much Too Much), was recognized as one of World Music Network’s Top 6 Songs of 2014.

Charlie Brown Christmas Live on Stage
Everyone’s favorite holiday classic comes to life as Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, and the whole Peanuts gang produce their own Christmas play and ultimately learn the true meaning of the season. A Charlie Brown Christmas Live On Stage provides a completely new way of experiencing the story, as characters are played by real actors who maintain the integrity and animate the spirit of each Peanuts character.

Set to the original and unforgettable music of Vince Guaraldi, the Emmy and Peabody award-winning animated story by Charles M. Schulz has become a longstanding holiday tradition, warming the hearts of millions of fans since it first aired on television over 50 years ago. This stage adaptation includes everyone’s favorite scenes and expands on the original storyline with more fun, more music, and more true Christmas spirit. For the show’s final celebratory song, the audience is invited to join in this genuine Peanuts experience and sing along. This is one gift the whole family can enjoy!

New Year's Eve with Crawdad Republic
With a vocally-driven style, Crawdad Republic offers an appealing mix of Americana, folk and bluegrass music. In 2017, they sold every seat in the house, proving that their Livermore wine country roots makes them an ideal band to ring in the new year in the heart of downtown. Crawdad Republic has entertained audiences throughout the Tri-Valley for years at outdoor concerts outside the Bankhead and many other local venues. After Crawdad Republic’s lively performance, join the rest of the audience in the lobby for complimentary champagne, wine and a festive dessert buffet to celebrate the year-end.
