Lantern Light Festival
Join us for a spectacular evening of dazzling lights, colors, shapes, and themes. The Lantern Light festival is a six week celebration of Chinese culture featuring massive lanterns, inspiring performances, and incredible cuisine. A tradition that started over 2,000 years ago, the lantern festival is China’s most important celebration, marking the return of spring, with the lighting of Chinese lanterns being symbolic of illuminating the future and the reunion of family.

While many people picture lanterns being released into the night sky, these enormous lanterns stay firmly on the ground. Each Chinese lantern is custom-built by Chinese artisans and typically takes four weeks and a team of seven to complete. The lanterns appear to be three-dimensional stained glass, and are handmade from hundreds of pieces of silky cloth. Some are over 30 feet high and others are up to 300 feet long.

If you enjoy an evening full of festive lights and amazing sights, bring your family to the Lantern Light Festival, a rare opportunity to witness the majestic skill of the world’s best lantern-makers.

Jake Shimabukuro
Innovative Master of the Ukulele

With his recently released album “The Greatest Day,” Jake Shimabukuro again demonstrates what makes him one of the most exceptional and innovative ukulele player in the history of the instrument. His pure virtuosity and unique playing style has been compared to such musical titans as Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis and draws on a remarkable breadth of musical influences. His music breathes fresh life into everything from covers of hard-driving rock classics and jazz songbook standards, to traditional Hawaiian music and his own original melodies.

Jake’s rich and varied albums have always captured the many moods of the ukulele. “The Greatest Day” features some of his most imaginative and adventuresome work with half of the album being originals, the other half covers that seem to achieve the impossible, transcending such material as the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” Hendrix’s “If 6 was 9” and the Zombies’ “Time of the Season.”

Shimabukuro believes, “if everyone played the ukulele, the world would be a better place”—his passionate energy, creativity and style creates a musical magic that makes it so.

Duarte Garage and Lincoln Highway Museum Open
The Duarte Garage was built in 1915 by F.H. Duarte on the original Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental U.S. Highway. When the Carquinez Bridge opened in 1927, the highway was re-routed. This section fronting the north doors was eventually renamed Portola Avenue. Junction Avenue originally ran past the south doors.

The garage sold Associated gasoline and oil products and also performed repairs. In 1923 the south half of the garage was added and became an automobile dealership, selling Durant Star and Flint models. Robert Livermore Jr. was one of the salesmen in the early 1920’s.

In the early 1940’s the garage was converted into a machine shop for rebuilding winery and farm equipment. During the 1970’s the City of Livermore purchased the Duarte Garage and surrounding land for use as a park (now adjacent east of the Garage and caretaker's home). The Livermore Heritage Guild signed a lease in 1976 to restore and maintain the garage for use as a museum.

The Annual Guild Dinner and Annual Auction are both held in the garage. The Auction in particular is a favorite for people from all around.
