Main Library |
City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau is the book chosen for
kids to read this year during February's Livermore Reads Together month.
Set in the future, Ember is a city located deep underground. It was
designed by the Planners, who built the city knowing there was the
possibility of a catastrophe on earth. The Planners were convinced that
survival would be unlikely on the surface of the planet. Two hundred
years later, the electricity in the City of Ember is failing - the
lights are going out. Lina and her friend Doon are afraid that the
darkness will be forever. Can they follow clues to find a way out for
themselves and their town?
On Saturday, February 16 at 1:00 PM children in grades 4-6 are invited
to visit the City of Ember at the Civic Center Library to explore the
city, finish the word puzzle begun in the book, and search for a hidden
notebook in the library. Flashlights are recommended.

Speeder Rides, Niles Canyon Railway
Railroad motor cars, also called "speeders", are the way that track crews
used to travel. These days, most railroads don't use speeders. They have
converted to "high-railers," or pickup trucks with flanged wheels at each
end, to carry their work crews on the rails or the highways. Now, the Niles
Canyon Railway presents an opportunity to ride the rails the way that track
gangs used to travel. Speeder rides will be offered to the public for a
unique railroad experience.
Advance sales only. Rides are very limited. Long pants and
closed shoes are required.

Niles Canyon Railway Wine Tasting Trains.
Enjoy a gustatory Tour de Train conducted by certified sommelier and wine
educator, Sean Andrade. These relaxing two-hour trips through Niles Canyon
will present over 30 different “Sommelier Selections" from six local
wineries throughout the event. Choose one or all of these delightful
afternoon excursions each Sunday through August 31.
These special trains start with a traditional French champagne saberage;
then explore the secrets of wine tasting and food and wine pairing. A
typical selection will include two whites and three reds with the foods that
highlight their unique characteristics. Different wines are featured every
week, along with carefully selected cheeses, breads or chocolates to
compliment each offering.
Mr. Andrade has been featured in many publications for his fresh and easy
approach. "Wine without snobbery or pretense, the way it should be... fun!"
He also travels the world to teach and is the wine writer for TriValley
Magazine.
Everyone receives a highly collectable commemorative wine glass and
special buffet tray that are yours to keep. Come back every week and collect
enough to host your own wine and cheese party.
Featuring Livermore Valley area wineries:
- Eckert Estate - Elliston - Fenestra - Red Skye - Stony Ridge - Thomas
Coyne
Passengers MUST BE age 21 or older to ride. Reservations required.

The following description is from the
Nile Canyon
Railway PagePacific Locomotive Association and The Golden Gate
Railroad Museum will again team up on Labor Day weekend to run series of

GGRM’s ex-Southern Pacific steam locomotive #2472. The P8 Pacific class

These excursions were very popular when they were last held over the

Photographers Special. This photo special will feature a train painted in
the traditional green color and will provide several of photo runbys and
will depart Sunol Station at 8:30 am to take advantage of the morning light
in the canyon. Limited seating will be available; so order tickets in
advance.
Family trains will depart at 1:30 and 3:00pm on Saturday afternoon, and
will feature “open cars” in addition to the Harriman cars from the morning
train. In addition, Southern Pacific business car “Oakland” will be added as
a “First Class” car to the train. On Monday Family Train departures will be
at 10:30am, 12:00am, 1:30pm, and 3:00pm from Sunol.
On Sunday, heritage railroad equipment owned by the GGRM will be on
display at the Sunol Depot. This includes Railway Post Office UP 5901, Steam
Locomotive #2472, and Business Car SP 141 “Oakland”.
The Photographers Train will be $65. The family trains will have open and
closed cars with tickets prices at $25 for adults and $10 for children.
Refreshments will be sold on board. First Class service will offered for a
limited number of passengers aboard the Business Car Oakland for $50 each
(adults only) on the Saturday and Monday family trains; adult beverages and
snacks will be included in the fare.
