Scottish Games

Aug 31 & Sept 1

Scottish Games
Thirty-five-plus pipe bands and a U.S. Marine Band in a gala presentation is but one part of the huge celebration of everything Celtic at the Scottish Highland Gathering & Games.

Celebrating it’s 154th consecutive year, the extravaganza returns to the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, California, over the Labor Day weekend, August 31st and September 1st.

Regarded as one of, if not the largest such gathering in the world, the Games have been presented by the Caledonian Club of San Francisco since 1865. The Games moved to Northern and Central California’s largest fairgrounds in Pleasanton 26-years ago in order to accommodate the 25 different venues, that include the 800-plus pipers and drummers, the 45th U.S. Invitational Heavy Event athletics, the Western States Highland Dancing Competition, seven stages of continuous traditional and Celtic Rock entertainment, historic pageantry with Mary Queen of Scots and her Highland Warriors escorts, plus so much more. Add a 100 clan area, Irish Step Dancing exhibitions, falconry, highland cattle and five-a-side soccer, Rugby and Shinty tournaments, and you have a full day’s worth of entertainment.

The U.S. Marine Band performs daily with a world-class pipe band in marching and stationary formations, interspersed with the military brass band and the pipers and drummers. Viewed only at these Scottish Games, the Marine/Pipe Band performance is part of the daily Closing Ceremonies along with the 35-plus pipe bands from the U.S. and Canada in front of the massive fairgrounds covered grandstands. The world-class assemblage uses the front straight of the one-mile horse racing track.

These annual Games are considered by many as one of the best “band-for-your-buck” festivals in the world!

Brilliance at the Bankhead Gala - Matthew Morrison
Called a “triple threat” for his exceptional singing, dancing and acting talent, Matthew Morrison has been nominated for Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. He made his debut on Broadway as a teen, and scored his first big break originating the role of Link Larkin in “Hairspray.” He followed that up with roles in “The Light in the Piazza” and “South Pacific.” His most recent stint on Broadway was in the starring role of J.M.Barrie in the musical “Finding Neverland.”

While best known for his central role as Mr. Schuester on the award-winning television show “Glee,” Morrison has also been a guest on such television hits as “The Good Wife” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” He starred in the film “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” and, as a singer, has released two recordings – his debut album featuring duets with Sting and Elton John and the more recent “Where It All Began,” an album of Broadway standards. He currently is serving as one of three dance captains on Simon Cowell’s new BBC One competition series, “The Greatest Dancer.”

An exceptional entertainer with an engaging stage presence, he will perform hits from Broadway and the American songbook accompanied by the Livermore-Amador Symphony at “Brilliance at the Bankhead.” Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center’s largest fundraising event of the year, the gala includes dinner and live music on the plaza before the show, as well as live and silent auctions.

Glenn Miller Orchestra
Formed in 1938 , the Glenn Miller Orchestra delivered a big band magic that soon took the nation by storm. Built around melodies played by the clarinet and tenor saxophone, Miller’s arrangements established a unique style and sound that broke away from the rest of the big band groups at the time. They scored one of their biggest hits “Moonlight Serenade” that first year, followed by “In the Mood” and “Little Brown Jug,” and by 1940 the Glenn Miller Orchestra had topped the charts a record eight times in a single year. “Tuxedo Junction”, “Pennsylvania 6-5000”, “Chattanooga Choo Choo”, “A String of Pearls”, “At Last”, and “(I’ve Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo” became the soundtrack of an era and have continued to appear in pop culture ever since.

Although his remarkable career was cut short when his plane disappeared during WWII, Glenn Miller brought swing music to new heights and his work had a lasting impact on the musical world. Led by Nick Hilscher with guest vocalist Maria Schafer, an evening with the Glenn Miller Orchestra enchants audiences with the timeless swing sound.

San Francisco Comedy Competition
Now in its 44th year, the San Francisco Comedy Competition has helped launch a Who’s Who of comic champions. Over the years, legends such as Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, and Ellen DeGeneres have emerged from this stand-up comedy contest to become stars.

Among the many competitions around the country, the format of the San Francisco Comedy Competition makes winning particularly challenging. The preliminary rounds consist of short stand up sets in six venues, which may include comedy clubs, bars, restaurants, casinos and theaters. Ten comedians proceed to the semi-finals for longer sets in six more venues, before moving to the finals, where the length of the sets increase to 12-15 minutes.

Since 2015, the Bankhead Theater has become a popular stop, one of the last on the semifinal circuit, where the competition keeps audiences on the edge of their seats … until they’re rolling in the aisle with laughter.

Livermore Valley Opera - Eugene Onegin
This crown jewel of the Russian operatic repertoire is a passionate drama filled with sweepingly beautiful and unabashedly romantic music. Tchaikovsky’s best-loved opera is based on Alexander Pushkin’s profoundly human verse drama. Packed with memorable music, dances and a heart-stopping duel, it tells the bittersweet tale of a love that could have been. Our extravagant production will transport you to the courtly elegance of nineteenth century Russia. Sung in Russian with English supertitles.

Gala:
The Gala begins with a Welcome Reception at 4:00 pm. Following will be a Dinner at 4:30 pm.

Duarte Garage and Lincoln Highway Museum Open
The Duarte Garage was built in 1915 by F.H. Duarte on the original Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental U.S. Highway. When the Carquinez Bridge opened in 1927, the highway was re-routed. This section fronting the north doors was eventually renamed Portola Avenue. Junction Avenue originally ran past the south doors.

The garage sold Associated gasoline and oil products and also performed repairs. In 1923 the south half of the garage was added and became an automobile dealership, selling Durant Star and Flint models. Robert Livermore Jr. was one of the salesmen in the early 1920’s.

In the early 1940’s the garage was converted into a machine shop for rebuilding winery and farm equipment. During the 1970’s the City of Livermore purchased the Duarte Garage and surrounding land for use as a park (now adjacent east of the Garage and caretaker's home). The Livermore Heritage Guild signed a lease in 1976 to restore and maintain the garage for use as a museum.

The Annual Guild Dinner and Annual Auction are both held in the garage. The Auction in particular is a favorite for people from all around.
