Apollo 13 (1995)
Astronaut Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks) and his team Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) and Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) depart on what was to be NASA’s third lunar landing in 1970. Halfway through the mission, an explosion threatens the crew’s oxygen and power supplies. Signaling the emergency with what became an iconic phrase “Houston, we have a problem,” the astronauts bravely face either suffocating or freezing to death, as Mission Control leader Gene Kranz (Ed Harris) struggles to find a way to bring them home safely. Directed by Ron Howard, the historical drama was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar and subsequently rereleased in IMAX format in 2002.

Derik Nelson & Family
On genuine, passionate interpretations of original and cover songs, Derik Nelson with his siblings, Riana and Dalten, offer a rare opportunity to hear the perfectly blended harmonies only a family can deliver. Derik appeared regularly as lead guitarist on “Glee,” and both Riana and Dalten pursued performance careers, before the three joined together as a group. Now their acoustic jazz and folk infused sound, combined with stunning video displays, creates an irresistible aural and visual journey that appeals to all ages. One of just 15 groups named US Cultural Ambassadors in 2018, Derik, Riana and Dalten shared their engaging sound with audiences in Moldova and Albania last fall.

In the week leading up to the concert on July 12, Derik, Riana and Dalten will work with local students in a workshop format, offering a priceless opportunity to expand their musical skills. The weeklong workshop will focus on developing singing, songwriting and performance techniques. At the end of the week, students will showcase their talents in a performance for family and friends. Registration for the workshop will open in the spring. Space is limited.

Sklar Brothers
The Sklar Brothers are a post-modern take on a stand-up comedy duo. Real-life identical twins, The New York Times says, “Their comedy doesn’t rely on it, but instead they work as imperfect carbon copies of each other. In their comedy, the straight man is often an echo.” They are perhaps best known for their cult comedy hit on ESPN Classic, which spanned the current podcast, “View from the Cheap Seats.” In addition to their many comedy specials, they have appeared on a wide variety of television shows from “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Better Call Saul,” and “Playing House,” to “Entourage, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Opening: Nate Fridson
Nate Fridson is a talented comedian who lives in Brooklyn – but get this: he used to live in the midwest! The Michigan native can be heard on Sirius/XM and has been seen on the NFL Network. He’s the cohost of the smash hit stand-up show, “Dark Spots,” and his album, “Best Guy So Far,” is available on aspecialthing Records. He is currently a very nice boy.

Jessica Fichot @ The Bothwell
Chanteuse and songwriter Jessica Fichot is a lot like her hometown of Paris: French at heart, but with a soul that’s truly international. Drawing from her multi-ethnic French-Chinese-American upbringing, her music fuses styles and languages, taking the listener on a twisting journey out of the French chanson tradition, into the lands of gypsy jazz, retro Chinese swing, international folk, and out onto the wilderness of her imagination.

Following her two acclaimed albums “Le Chemin,” “Le Secret,” Fichot’s most recent release is “Dear Shanghai.” Sung in Mandarin Chinese, the EP is an intoxicating mix of 1940s Shanghai jazz gems, Mandopop classics and her own inspired original songs, described as melding “childlike sweetness with grown-up savoir faire.”

Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity - Rae Dorough Speaker Series
Far sooner than we think, the genetic revolution will transform the world within and around us. Today we think about genetic technologies primarily in the context of healthcare. But, with its potential to alter our evolutionary trajectory as a species, the genetics revolution may be the greatest opportunity as well as the most daunting challenge of our time. Technology futurist and geopolitical expert Jamie Metzl explores what the genetics revolution means for you, your family, the country and the world — and what we all must do to prepare.

Jamie Metzl is a leading futurist, geopolitical expert, science fiction novelist, and media commentator and a Senior Fellow of the Atlantic Council. He was recently appointed to the World Health Organization expert advisory committee on developing global standards for the governance and oversight of human genome editing. Jamie previously served in the U.S. National Security Council, State Department, Senate Foreign Relations Committee, as Executive Vice President of the Asia Society and with the United Nations in Cambodia. Jamie appears regularly on national and international media discussing global issues and his syndicated columns and other writing on Asian affairs, genetics, virtual reality, and other topics are featured regularly in publications around the world.

Jaimie is the author of a history of the Cambodian genocide, the historical novel The Depths of the Sea, and the genetics sci-fi thrillers Genesis Code and Eternal Sonata.

His new book Hacking Darwin: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Humanity was released in April 2019. The New Christy Minstrels
The New Christy Minstrels forged a fresh folk sound in the 1960s with a lighthearted style that was welcomed in the heart of a challenging era. Original songs such as “Green, Green” and their cover of “Sing in the Sunshine” topped the charts and their debut album won a Grammy Award in 1963. More than 20 albums later with creator Randy Sparks still at the helm, the New Christy Minstrels continue to deliver the rich harmonies and tuneful melodies that have enchanted their fans for decades.

Duarte Garage and Lincoln Highway Museum Open
The Duarte Garage was built in 1915 by F.H. Duarte on the original Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental U.S. Highway. When the Carquinez Bridge opened in 1927, the highway was re-routed. This section fronting the north doors was eventually renamed Portola Avenue. Junction Avenue originally ran past the south doors.

The garage sold Associated gasoline and oil products and also performed repairs. In 1923 the south half of the garage was added and became an automobile dealership, selling Durant Star and Flint models. Robert Livermore Jr. was one of the salesmen in the early 1920’s.

In the early 1940’s the garage was converted into a machine shop for rebuilding winery and farm equipment. During the 1970’s the City of Livermore purchased the Duarte Garage and surrounding land for use as a park (now adjacent east of the Garage and caretaker's home). The Livermore Heritage Guild signed a lease in 1976 to restore and maintain the garage for use as a museum.

The Annual Guild Dinner and Annual Auction are both held in the garage. The Auction in particular is a favorite for people from all around.
