Science on Saturday: Give Your Brain a Voice
The human brain is composed of billions of cells that communicate through chemical and electrical signals. LLNL microelectrodes can interface directly with the brain to allow us to monitor and manipulate the dynamics of these brain signals. LLNL microelectrodes are flexible and microfabricated in dense arrays that allow them to collect large amounts of information over long periods of time in the body. We will go over how these arrays are microfabricated and their diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

Science on Saturday: In the Mood
The human brain contains approximately 86 billion neurons, and 100 trillion connections between those neurons. Despite our inability to image each neuron and determine their exact connective patterns, several approaches for noninvasive imaging of the living brain have been developed and utilized to great benefit. In this talk, we will explore the immense landscape of the human brain and quantify the brain in terms of data flow. Then we will describe engineering applications of recorded electrophysiological data. We will also explore methods for analyzing such data to determine the pattern of signals that arise during various activities and mood states.

Top Hat
In his “Top Hat, White Tie and Tails,” American dancer Jerry Travers (Fred Astaire) is set to star in a London show but finds he’s more interested in winning the affections of the lovely Dale Tremont (Ginger Rogers.) A mistaken identity, a designing suitor, and some interfering friends get in the way on their road to love. Set to a memorable score by Irving Berlin, Top Hat was arguably the most successful of the dozen Astaire/Rogers films and the sleek footwork (and flying feathers) of the famous “Cheek to Cheek” remains one of their best known dance sequences.

Science on Saturday: Seed, Soil, and Spread
Cancer becomes highly dangerous when it spreads from its original site to a different vital organ. These secondary tumors called metastases are what kill most patients. Despite hundreds of years of research, it is not understood why, where, and how cancer spreads to organs like the brain. A major limitation in our current knowledge is how we study this process; most metastasis research is performed in mice. At LLNL, we are building systems to watch metastasis happen. Using 3D printing technology paired with advanced computer modeling, we create functional human brain blood vessels to monitor how cancer cells spread to the brain and form a tumor. This talk will describe how we bring together cancer biology, 3D printing and material science, to understand and hopefully prevent metastases in the future.

The Choir of Man
It’s a party. It’s a concert. It’s a pint-filled good time set in a real working pub that combines hair-raising harmonies, high-energy dance, and live percussion with foot-stomping choreography. The runaway hit of numerous international music festivals, the nine members of the Choir of Man sing and dance their way through everything from favorite sing-along classics to classic rock, all while pulling pints and inviting the audience to get up close and personal with the show. Featuring the music of Paul Simon, Adele, Queen, Guns n Roses and more, it’s 90 minutes of indisputable joy… the ultimate feel-good show!

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
It’s been 25 years since their very first show at a backyard party and now, nearly 3,000 shows later Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s irresistible live show is every bit as dynamic and exciting. Their aggressive, musically-perceptive approach made them a standout among the numerous bands that launched the Nineties swing revival and earned them a fan base that has lasted for decades. With a massively-successful fusion of classic American sounds, blending music from the jazz, swing, Dixieland and big-band traditions, they built their own songbook of original dance tunes. Now after a quarter century and nearly a dozen albums, including last year’s “Louie, Louie, Louie”, BBVD continues to share their musical journey with non-stop energy and infectious enthusiasm.

Science on Saturday: Crossing the Blood Barrier
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a special structure in the body that helps to protect the brain from unwanted toxins and germs. Unfortunately, this barrier can also make it extremely difficult for therapeutics to reach their intended target within brain. This requires the modification of the therapeutic drugs to allow them to cross the BBB and enter the brain where they can reach their target and be effective. Testing which chemical modifications act to improve accessibility of therapeutics to the brain can be a long and expensive process. At LLNL, we are combining experimental techniques with computational methods, making use of some of the fastest supercomputers in the world, to speed up the process of optimizing therapeutics to cross the BBB.

Livermore-Amador Symphony  - Colorful Characters
Few composers had more success in their youth than the legendary Giacomo Rossini. His overture to William Tell takes us on a vivid journey from sunrise through a dramatic storm to meet our hero galloping into battle. The famous overture concludes with the most recognizable music of all time, known to many as the theme from The Lone Ranger. Aaron Copland introduces us to a real legend of the American West, Billy the Kid. His evocative music brings together fragments of real cowboy tunes within expansive harmonies that conjure up the western frontier. Come hear these stories, and meet the talented winners of our Young Musicians Competition.

Duarte Garage and Lincoln Highway Museum Open

Duarte Garage and Lincoln Highway Museum Open
The Duarte Garage was built in 1915 by F.H. Duarte on the original Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental U.S. Highway. When the Carquinez Bridge opened in 1927, the highway was re-routed. This section fronting the north doors was eventually renamed Portola Avenue. Junction Avenue originally ran past the south doors.

The garage sold Associated gasoline and oil products and also performed repairs. In 1923 the south half of the garage was added and became an automobile dealership, selling Durant Star and Flint models. Robert Livermore Jr. was one of the salesmen in the early 1920’s.

In the early 1940’s the garage was converted into a machine shop for rebuilding winery and farm equipment. During the 1970’s the City of Livermore purchased the Duarte Garage and surrounding land for use as a park (now adjacent east of the Garage and caretaker's home). The Livermore Heritage Guild signed a lease in 1976 to restore and maintain the garage for use as a museum.

The Annual Guild Dinner and Annual Auction are both held in the garage. The Auction in particular is a favorite for people from all around.
