International Guitar Night
Now celebrating 21 years of International Guitar Night tours, founder Brian Gore brings together four talented artists from around the world to explore the diversity of the acoustic guitar through individual flair and creative collaboration. Returning to the Bankhead in 2022, Germany’s Latin Swing master Lulo Reinhardt will serve as guest host, joined by contemporary classical guitarist Stephanie Jones from Australia, Russian two-hand “tapper” Alexandre Misko, and traditional jazz guitarist Jocelyn Gould from Canada.

Originally from Winnipeg, Jocelyn Gould first studied voice and piano, as well as science, before following in her parent’s footsteps to take up the guitar. Since earning her Master’s degree in Jazz Studies from Michigan State University, she has pursued an international performance career at prestigious festivals and clubs worldwide. She currently holds the guitar chair of Detroit’s big band, The Gathering Orchestra, and in 2018, won first place in the Wilson International Jazz Guitar Competition.

Stephanie Jones, a soloist and chamber musician, is the recipient of numerous awards including 2014’s Young Virtuoso of the Year through the Fine Music Network National Competition, and first prize in both the Uppsala International Guitar Festival Competition and the Hannabach Guitar Competition. She has released two albums, “Colours of Spain” (2015), and “Bach, the Fly, and the Microphone” (2009) and, as a member of the renowned Weimar Guitar Quartet, will perform on their debut album this year.

Alexandr Misko is a dazzling new breed of modern fingerstyle guitarist. The 21-year-old Russian performs in concerts all over the world and appears often on television in his homeland and other countries. He has achieved worldwide fame and over a million followers on YouTube since his original tune “Guitar & Pen Tapping Song” became popular. Since 2016 he has released three studio albums and was named the “Guitarist of the Year” at the prestigious UK Guitar Show in 2018.

A guitar virtuoso with unmistakable roots, Lulo Reinhardt built on his legendary grand-uncle Django’s passionate style of Gypsy Jazz to create his own unique Latin swing style. As a young man, Lulo’s interest in flamenco roots music took him to southern Spain and to South America, where his fascination for Latin music soon emerged in his now trademark swing-infused jazz style. He played for decades in his family’s band before starting his own in 2002 to perform only his own original compositions. Lulo has released three solo albums, as well as numerous collaborative recordings. Before serving as host for IGN, he appeared previously as a soloist on multiple tours.

The Everly Brothers Experiences ft. The Zmed Brothers
The Everlys bridged country and rock with countless classics like Wake Up Little Susie, All I Have To Do Is Dream, Bird Dog, Cathy’s Clown, When Will I Be Loved and Bye Bye Love… plus they inspired groundbreaking groups like The Beatles, The Kinks, Buddy Holly and Simon & Garfunkel. The Zmed brothers skillfully cover the Everly Brothers with a bit of their own trademark style mixed in.

The Zmed brothers, Zachary and Dylan, bring a genuine and youthful Everly Brothers experience to the stage. Celebrating the genetic intimacy so ever present in the harmonies created by Don and Phil Everly. When the guitar became electric, the Everly Brothers bridged the gap between Country and Rock n Roll with countless hits and classics. The Everly Brothers inspired bands like The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, The Kinks, Buddy Holly, and many groups that utilize the blend of two part harmony. Their career spanned three decades and continue to influence artists around the world.

Livermore Valley Opera - Otello

Livermore Valley Opera - Otello
In his penultimate opera, Verdi brings to life Shakespeare’s tragic tale of the moor Otello, his beloved Desdemonda, and the melvolent Iago. Conducted by Alexander Katsman and staged by Candace Evans. The production will feature the return of bass-baritone Philip Skinner in the role of Iago, tenor Limmie Pulliam as Otello, and soprano Elaine Alvarez as Desdemona.

LVO presents Verdi’s OTELLO in an ambitious production worthy of our return to the Bankhead stage. The crowning work of a master composer at the peak of his creative powers, OTELLO is arguably Verdi’s greatest operatic achievement. Verdi’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragic story of jealousy and rage is an opera that ranks among his most demanding, both vocally and dramatically. This production will do justice to Verdi’s tour de force and will be an experience not to be missed.

The Stories of Cesar Chavez is a dramatic bilingual portrayal of the civil rights and labor leader Cesar Chavez. Actor Fred Blanco embodies a host of characters, from youthful zoot-suiters and farmworkers to racist teamsters and angry radicals, all while giving a glimpse of the man fighting for equality for all.

Bessie, Billie and Nina

Bessie, Billie and Nina
From the Jim Crow era-South through the turbulent 1960s, Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone were among the most influential and popular singers of their times. Both within their music and outside of the clubs and concert halls, they wielded their exceptional talents to combat racial prejudice, sexism, and poverty. Whether powerfully and playfully claiming her autonomy and sexuality (Bessie Smith), forcing America to acknowledge the racism pervasive in the American South and beyond (Billie Holiday), or giving voice to the Civil Rights movement with stirring protest anthems (Nina Simone), these trailblazing singers spoke to and for the disenfranchised as women, African-Americans, and artists. All three women defied social norms, embracing self-empowerment through their art.

“Bessie, Billie & Nina: Pioneering Women in Jazz” features three dynamic vocalists, each a rising star in her own right: Charenée Wade and Camille Thurman, both regular performers with Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Tahira Clayton, co-leader of the Women in Jazz Organization. Backed by an all-female band, the three celebrate the enduring legacies of these iconic women and artists with unforgettable performances of their classic songs, including Bessie Smith’s “Downhearted Blues,” Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit,” and Nina Simone’s “Mississippi Goddam.”

The musical and social legacies of Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, and Nina Simone remain as relevant as ever. Their contributions resonate with today’s artists across many genres, as well as with ongoing movements toward progress and equality for women, African-Americans, and the LGBTQ community. The rich music of “Billie, Bessie & Nina” will entertain, inspire, and empower audiences during this pivotal time in our own history.

Velocity Irish Dance
Representing the next generation in Irish tap, Velocity Irish Dance honors past traditions but blasts them feet first into the 21st century. Guinness World Record holder for “the fastest feet in the world,” James Devine, and five-time world champion Irish dancer, David Geaney are joined on stage by a motley crew of mind-blowing musicians and an old school scratch DJ. They break away from the idea of what an Irish dance show is to create one that is expressive, free, fast-paced and edgy, driven by passion and pride.

The two illustrious Irish hoofers come together in an intimate, no-nonsense jam session of impossible scuffles, shuffles and every time-step in between. A multimedia show for all ages that earnestly traces its evolution while toying with tradition, Velocity is a high-octane celebration of the past, present and future of Irish dance.
