JD Souther
Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013, JD Souther’s songs have taken up residence in our collective memories. He is as well-known for the songs he’s written for other people, as for his hit single “You’re Only Lonely” which dominated the airwaves in 1979. During the 70s and 80s, Souther wrote or co-wrote such familiar chart-topping hits as “Heartache Tonight” and “Best of My Love” for The Eagles, “Heart of the Matter” for Don Henley, and “Her Town Too” for James Taylor. His songwriting talents found a home with hitmakers in both country and rock, from Linda Ronstadt, Glenn Frey, and Jackson Browne, to George Strait, Trisha Yearwood and more. Continually creative and musically evolving, Souther has also released seven solo albums, including his most recent, “Tenderness,” filled with music as timeless and appealing as ever.

The weekly “Evenings on the Green,” held outside the Bankhead Theater, will take on a “Summer of Lovermore” theme on August 8, 2017 in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love. Beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the plaza, artisans will display their work and a free community “Paint In” will be facilitated by artist Jasmine Partida. Back to School Celebration
The magical sound of steel drums will revitalize students and their parents in a free back-to-school event at the Bankhead Theater on August 11th. Held on the last Friday before the 2017-2018 school year begins for students in the Tri-Valley, the final celebration of the summer will feature a performance on the steel drums by Shawn Thwaites inside the Bankhead lobby.

The Yeomen of the Guard
War hero Colonel Fairfax is to be executed based on false charges made by a villainous relative who stands to inherit his estate. Before his expected death, he marries Elsie, a street performer, who – as his widow – will inherit all and thus thwart the relative. The plot twists, however, when Fairfax, disguised as a Yeoman, is smuggled out of the Tower of London. Add to the mix Elsie’s performing partner who is in love with her, an incompetent jailer, and a crowd of bloodthirsty townsfolk, and we have a dark comedy of love and loss, secrets and lies, choices and consequences.
