Mozart: Exsultate, Jubilate
Mahler Symphony No. 4
Emily Helenbrook, soprano soloist
Begin your holiday season with the radiant, sunny optimism of musical giants Mozart and Mahler as we present two joyful works featuring the beautiful voice of a rising star, Emily Helenbrook. Mozart’s Exsultate, Jubilate urges us to raise our voices in joyful exuberance, and with the jingle of sleigh bells, Mahler’s glorious Symphony No. 4 invites us to leave our worldly cares behind and opens the gates of heaven. ArtVoice raved about “the fresh young singer, Emily Helenbrook...the angelically voiced soprano....” after she performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic in 2015. A senior at the Eastman School of Music, Helenbrook won an Art Leadership Award in 2015 and the Annabel Muenter Vocal Prize in the 2016 Friends of Eastman Opera Voice Competition.

Nell Robinson & Jim Nunally Band
The Nell Robinson & Jim Nunally Band brings five genre-busting artists together to bring joyful music infused with folk, bluegrass, americana, roots, swing, jazz, and the blues. Alt-Roots, Folkbilly – whatever you call it – it’s original, well done, and a pleasure to hear. Featuring Pete Grant on pedal steel, Jim Kerwin on bass fiddle and Jon Arkin on percussion. This is truly an all-star band.

The Nell Robinson & Jim Nunally Band have released two of their four new albums due out this year, West and East, soon to be followed by North and South. These five-song EPs are named after the cardinal points on a compass – North, South, East, and West – their U.S. tour dates will coincide with the appropriate regions throughout 2016. When placed together, the back covers of the four releases will form one piece of art. Physical copies will be available for only $5 at all live shows, with digital release via iTunes and Amazon coming soon.

“We are excited about releasing a series of eclectic new works with a super talented band,” says Jim Nunally. “We pay homage to great artists like George Jones, Buck Owens, Tammy Wynette, while our original songs like ‘Mirror’ take folk music in an entirely new direction. We aren’t just following a path; we are paving a new one.”

Mount Diablo Beacon Lit
Once a year, on December 7th, the Mt. Diablo beacon is lit and shines over a wide area from around sunset until around sunrise the next day.
A ceremony is held in which several Pearl Harbor survivors will speak of their experiences.  Afterwards they will together push a button that lights the beacon.

The Beacon can be seen from throughout the area, and will remain lit all night.

The ceremony was formerly held at the Summit Building at Mount Diablo but has been held at the Cal State East Bay Concord Campus since 2013 due to the larger venue and weather issues.

The beacon was overhauled and restored in 2013 thanks to efforts of Save Mount Diablo.

eLivermore.com has photographed the event from 2010 to 2013.  See photos here.

David Benoit
Take a trip down memory lane as Grammy-nominated pianist David Benoit, accompanied by his quartet and a local children’s chorus, brings to life the magical music from the Charlie Brown television specials. Benoit describes this music as “happy jazz” – sophisticated but still filled with fun. His lifelong passion for the work of original Peanuts composer Vince Guaraldi is reflected in his own compositions for later specials and both are featured in this delightful return to a happy holiday tradition.

The Four Freshmen
In 1948, the Four Freshmen pioneered a style of close-harmony vocals built on the barbershop tradition. Today’s ensemble has been called the greatest jazz vocal group of all time; they preserve the group’s trademark vocals while providing their own musical accompaniment. Their vitality breathes new life into the jazz and pop standards that first made the Four Freshmen a success, blending four-part harmonies, a twist of elegance, a splash of swing, and a whole lot of fun for an unforgettable New Year’s Eve.
