Rickie Lee Jones
Over the span of her amazing career, two-time Grammy Award winner Rickie Lee Jones experienced significant commercial success, but a restless creative spirit -- combined with a stubborn refusal to fit comfortably into any one musical niche -- seals her ultimate destiny as a highly regarded cult heroine. With lots of creative sparks Rickie’s music transcends all of its historical touchstones, taking the elements (“Wind, fire, water, laughter,” explains Ms. Jones) to create something that sounds totally new--full of grace, soul and adventurous sonic textures.

The Smothers Brothers
LVPAC's Fall Gala for 2008.
Masters of timing and practitioners of timeless comedy, the Smothers Brothers legendary career surpasses all other comedy teams. LVPAC is thrilled to present them and their unique take on the American political landscape in this landmark presidential election year. A primetime comedy series, guest appearances on numerous television programs, and headliners in Las Vegas, Reno and Lake Tahoe, comprise just a few of their well-deserved claims to fame. Tom and Dick have had twelve top-selling albums, a successful video and continuous coast-to-coast concert tours and performances with symphony orchestras. These irrepressible brothers have made a sweeping impact on diverse generations of fans with their intuitive humor, natural warmth, and superlative showmanship. In addition to Tom and Dick’s hilarious performance, the gala evening, a fundraiser for LVPAC, will feature complimentary wine, sumptuous desserts and coffee at a festive reception in the theater lobby immediately following the performance. We hope you will join us for a spectacular evening to remember.

Livermore Drug Take Back Event (get rid of your old pharmaceuticals)
Flushing unwanted pharmaceuticals down the toilet or drain pollutes the environment because wastewater treatment plants do not remove the prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs and vitamins from the wastewater. Treated water from the wastewater treatment plants flows to the San Francisco Bay or enters irrigation systems. Although the long-term health effects of these chemicals on aquatic life and humans are still under study, proactive measures are recommended to keep the pharmaceuticals out of the environment. One way to do so is to stop flushing unwanted drugs down toilets or drains.

To help residents properly dispose of drugs, the City’s Water Resources Division and Police Department, and the American Red Cross are hosting a drug take back event. Livermore residents are invited to bring the following items to the Event for proper disposal:

Medicated ointments, lotions or creams
Non-narcotic capsule, tablet or liquid prescriptions
All over-the-counter medications
Vitamins and supplements
Pet medications
Keep the medication in personal containers with personal information market out.

Event Date / Time / Location Description
Dan White, Author of "The Cactus Eaters" at the Livermore Library. Oct 7
Tues
7pm

Main Library

Dan White, author of The Cactus Eaters: How I Lost My Mind – and Almost Found Myself – on the Pacific Crest Trail, will speak at the Livermore Public Library Civic Center, 1188 S. Livermore Avenue, at 7pm on Tuesday, October 7th. There is no charge for this event. A fascinating history of the Pacific Crest Trail and an exploration of the darker side of America’s wilderness, The Cactus Eaters is a wickedly funny travel memoir with heart.

Dan White’s humorous and heartfelt memoir, The Cactus Eaters, tracks the journey of Dan and his girlfriend, two inexperienced hikers, as they take on the challenging 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail – a route that stretches from Mexico to Canada, through boiling desert, snowcapped mountain passes, and bear country. How do two people who’ve never shared an apartment intend to survive six months in the wilds with hardly more than a two-man pup tent and some trail mix? The answer is “barely.” Despite warnings from their loved ones, Dan and his girlfriend set out into the wilderness. When these addled adventurers find themselves deep in the American wilderness, the hardships of the trail test the limits of love and sanity. As he charts their moments of bravery, stupidity, and luck, White shares their encounters with a veritable parade of backwoods characters – each one an unforgettable wonder of humanity and a testament to the transformative powers of nature.
