Wagner: Lohengrin Prelude to Act I
Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake Suite
Schubert: Rosamunde Overture
Strauss: Death and Transfiguration
Matilda Hofman, guest conductor
Join the symphony and guest conductor Matilda Hofman for an evening of magic and transformation. Wagner’s ethereal prelude to Lohengrin and Tchaikovsky’s hauntingly beautiful Swan Lake are connected by themes of sorcery, redemption, forbidden questions, and swan transformations. The Rosamunde overture is quintessential Schubert, and involves the transformation of a poor shepherdess into a queen. Strauss’s early tone poem Death and Transfiguration is preoccupied with late romantic obsessions of the individual who, struggling with the world, is finally redeemed. Music director of the Diablo Symphony, Matilda Hofman has a busy schedule in California and abroad. She works regularly with Empyrean Ensemble, the Early Music Ensemble at Davis, and the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble. She studied at Cambridge University, the Royal Academy of Music, and the Eastman School of Music, and was a conducting fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and school.

Judgment at Nuremberg
Based on one of the great courtroom dramas of the last century, Judgment at Nuremberg became an Academy Award-winning film and stage play that is both surprising and unsettling. A cast of unforgettable characters plays out a high-stakes game against the backdrop of a looming Cold War, shifting political alliances, and still shocking memories of World War II. This absorbing and complex drama poses questions about human rights, morality, compassion, and personal responsibility that remain relevant today.

Nuclear Weapons: They’re Back
After the fall of the Soviet Union, the USA seemed to be emerging from a vulnerability to dramatic destruction that it had lived with during the four decades of the Cold War. Two decades later we find ourselves in a world with nuclear weapons once again gaining a disturbing salience.
The theory of deterrence for security purposes has new complexities. Ambassador Robert L. Gallucci, distinguished academic and diplomat, speaks from his multifaceted career in foreign affairs and public service, including years of leading negotiations with North Korea. He will share insight and new perspectives on this reemerging global concern.

Riders in the Sky
For three decades, Riders In The Sky have kept alive the musical flame passed on by Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. Revitalizing the genre, they retain the integrity of Western music while branding it with their own wacky humor and way-out Western wit. “Woody’s Round-Up” from Disney’s Toy Story 2 made them the only western band to win a Grammy Award, an honor they have achieved twice. Whether sharing their music on stage, on the radio or on the road, the Riders enthusiastically live life “The Cowboy Way.”
